PartnersThe Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) National Residents’ Group was first formed as a steering group in 2001 and an election process to form a formal committee began in July 2002. Eighteen committee members were appointed and we held the first National Residents’ Conference in the same year.
The National Residents’ Group (NRG) works in partnership with MHP to encourage residents to participate in and influence the housing services they receive. We are involved in working alongside staff to form policies and business plans and to improve homes and communities for residents. We are a voice for MHP residents at a national and strategic level.
A governance review in 2003 provided an opportunity to take a new approach to resident involvement in decision-making and a Quality and Accountability Forum was established. The role of the forum is to scrutinise how MHP’s services are provided and to make sure that the association is accountable to residents for the decisions that it makes. The NRG has formal places on the Quality and Accountability Forum and is involved in carrying out audits to support the work of the Forum.
Resident involvement should be at the heart of everything a housing association does. It makes good business sense and supports the Government’s aim to make local communities sustainable. Involving residents is an essential ingredient of a quality housing service and, with this in mind, the NRG encourages all residents to get involved.
Getting involved does not mean that you have to attend lots of meetings and read a lot of paperwork. Although MHP has a range of formal committees in which you can get involved, you can decide your level of involvement from a variety of different options in your landlord’s Menu of Involvement. This allows you to be involved to the extent and at a level you wish and in a way that fits your lifestyle. Yvonne Cannaby
Yvonne lives in Bingham, Nottinghamshire and has been a resident activist with Rushcliffe Homes for several years, currently serving on their Board.
Ted Bremer- Chair of NRG
Ted lives in South London and is a leaseholder with Metropolitan Housing Trust. He is also involved with voluntary groups in his local community and has been a member of NRG for three years.
Mike Perkins
Mike lives in a MHT home in Nottingham City and joined the NRG in 2004.
June Carrington
June has been a NRG member since 2002 and is a resident of Rushcliffe Homes. June lives in East Nottinghamshire and has previously been Chair of Rushcliffe Tenants Consultative Group.
Ann Travers – Secretary
Ann Travers lives in Long Eaton, Notts and works full time in catering at Nottingham Trent University. Ann is also a member of the Midlands Regional Residents Panel.

Mary lives in Surrey and represents Roundshaw Homes on the NRG.
