Emergency contacts

Fire

If there is a fire:

  • Dial 999
  • Get everyone out of your home
  • Do not stop for personal belongings
  • Warn your neighbours
  • Do not leave anything in the shared area that could block the way for someone trying to get out.

Suspected gas leak

If you smell gas in your home:

  • Turn off the gas supply at the mains next to the gas meter
  • Open all doors and windows to get rid of the gas
  • Do not turn any electrical switches on or off
  • Do not light a match or cigarette lighter
  • Check to see if an appliance has been left on unlit, and
  • If the leak cannot be stopped by turning off an appliance, call Transco on 0800 111999 (this free service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

Electricity

If you have a partial electrical fault (e.g. the lights won’t come on):

  • Check your fuse box.

If you have an electrical fault you think might be dangerous:

  • Switch off the electricity at the mains supply (switch is next to your fuse box or next to the meter), and
  • Contact your electricity company.

If your mains supply fails completely:

  • Contact the number given on your electricity bill.

Water leaks and frozen pipes

If you have a leak or burst pipe:

  • Turn off the water supply at the mains stopcock – this will usually be situated under the kitchen sink, and
  • Call a plumber.
